Anuj Patel is Card Curator’s technical co-founder and director of engineering. Prior to joining Card Curator in February of 2021, Anuj worked at multiple asset management firms where he handled mergers and acquisitions for clients that were in the commercial real estate and hospitality industries.  As Card Curator’s director of engineering, Anuj manages the back end software that the application relies on; such as building data acquisition tools that use machine learning to acquire the necessary data Card Curator needs from the web, and is developing APIs to facilitate communication to the application. Currently, Anuj is earning his master’s degree in computer and information technology from the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and is set to graduate in May.

Read on to learn more about Anuj, his take on the future of fintech, as well as what’s in store for Card Curator!

Q: You were previously in the finance industry, what made you decide to change careers?

AP: While I was in the finance industry, I was building a lot of data aggregation and work optimization tools; which grew my interest in the software development field. I also saw that at the financial companies that I worked for, their software processes were antiquated and not up-to-date with the technology that is currently out there. Therefore, I looked at it as an opportunity for growth in the fintech sector.

Q: What made you decide to join Card Curator?

AP: I met John (Card Curator’s CEO) at a networking event here at UPenn and he told me about his product that he’s working on. It piqued my interest because I was always interested in the virtualization of our wallets as well as optimizing our credit cards for better rewards value; as a matter of fact, Card Curator’s product was something that I personally was thinking of developing myself. So, I jumped at the opportunity to join Card Curator’s team and help build out the product.

Q: What’s in store for the future for Card Curator?

AP: We’re currently tweaking the product based on our users’ feedback, and are also working on some exciting new features that will be launching soon. Be sure to be on the lookout for official announcements!

Q: What are your favorite hobbies?

AP: During the winter I enjoy snowboarding, and in the summer I love to play golf. I also like to dance!

Q: Which fintech trends do you see taking off in the near future?

AP: I see the virtualization of our wallets taking off more so than they have been now. Covid really led to a huge acceptance of contactless payments, and I think that’s here to stay. I also see more companies optimizing loyalty programs and finding discounts online while you shop, like Rakuten and Honey have been doing. Furthermore, I feel that there is going to be more accessibility to crypto payments as well; meaning you’re going to see more companies that will accept crypto as a form of payment.

Q: Lastly, what advice do you have for anyone who is interested in working at a startup?

AP: When you’re working at a startup, you’re going to take on more responsibilities with a lot less supervision. However, don’t be afraid to voice your limitations and to learn new things; take the initiative to bridge the gaps of your limitations by learning and growing as fast as you can.
